ATHENS, Greece — Authorities in Greece continued their search on Monday for a child who went missing after a small migrant boat ran aground on the island of Samos in the Aegean Sea. This operation was in its second day, following reports of the incident that occurred when the inflatable dinghy collided with rocky terrain.
According to a statement from the coast guard, 46 individuals, among them 21 children, successfully made it to shore and were located on Sunday. A survivor from the group informed the authorities that her child fell into the water during the boat’s landing and has since been unaccounted for.
Divers and coast guard vessels have extensively searched the area, yet so far there have been no findings regarding the missing child. The nationalities of those on board the vessel have not been disclosed at this time. Greece serves as a primary entry point for numerous migrants from regions such as the Middle East, Africa, and Asia who are looking to start anew in the European Union.
Most migrants traverse the short sea route from Turkey’s western coast to Samos and various other islands situated in the eastern Aegean.
In an unrelated development, the Greek coast guard reported that they had assisted 40 migrants, including nine children, who were discovered on a remote islet. These individuals were subsequently transported to a reception center located on the eastern island of Chios on Monday.
