DUBLIN — Tom O’Toole, the tighthead prop for Ireland, will not take part in the upcoming match against Argentina this week in Dublin due to a head injury sustained during the recent defeat to New Zealand.
O’Toole suffered his injury just two minutes after stepping onto the field to replace Finlay Bealham. Bealham, however, continued to play until the end of the match, which resulted in a 23-13 loss for Ireland.
Tadhg Furlong, another tighthead prop, participated in training on Monday and is hopeful to be fit for the match against the Pumas on Friday. He missed the game against the All Blacks due to a hamstring strain.
If Furlong is unable to play, the uncapped Leinster prop Thomas Clarkson, currently training with the team, may serve as a backup to Bealham.
Ireland’s recent defeat against New Zealand marked only their second home loss under the leadership of coach Andy Farrell and ended their 19-match winning streak at the Aviva Stadium, which included their Six Nations championship victory.
Aled Walters, Ireland’s head of athletic performance, expressed confidence that the team would respond positively this week after addressing some difficult truths.
“It’s only natural that there’s a bit of hurt, but it’s not rooted in anger,” Walters, who transitioned from his role in England to join Farrell’s coaching staff, mentioned on Monday.
“We have a cohesive group that is willing to reflect and be honest about the situation. This time, home truths were necessary, and everyone has been open to that. In fact, I’ve heard more voices contributing in team meetings this week than I did during my first two weeks here. The commitment to making improvements is strong among the players.”
