ANAHEIM, Calif. — The Anaheim Ducks clinched a much-needed win on Sunday night, breaking a four-game losing streak with a 4-2 triumph over the Columbus Blue Jackets, thanks to a stellar performance from goalie John Gibson, who made an impressive 38 saves.
This match marked Gibson’s season debut following an emergency appendectomy he underwent in September. The Ducks wasted no time in establishing their dominance as Brett Leason found the back of the net just 3 minutes and 13 seconds into the game, assisted by Cutter Gauthier.
Columbus managed to level the score late in the first period when Yegor Chinakhov scored his fourth goal of the season. But Anaheim quickly regained the lead in the second period at 4:22, when Jackson LaCombe scored off a loose puck.
As the game progressed, Leo Carlsson added another goal for Anaheim with 9:40 remaining, creating a 3-1 advantage. However, the Blue Jackets fought back, narrowing the deficit when Kirill Marchenko scored from the slot with just 3:03 left on the clock. Ultimately, Isac Lundestrom sealed the victory for the Ducks by putting the puck into an empty net.
Throughout the game, there were significant milestones for the Blue Jackets as well. Veteran Jack Johnson marked his 1,200th career NHL game, while Zach Werenski became the fourth defenseman in franchise history to reach 500 games played, contributing with an assist on Chinakhov’s goal.
For the Ducks, Gibson demonstrated his skill and readiness despite his recent absence, securing a win in his 12th season with Anaheim. His last recorded winning season dates back to 2018-19.
A key moment in the game came early in the second period when LaCombe’s goal off a rebound from teammate Troy Terry allowed the Ducks to take the lead for good.
Statistics showed that during their recent losing streak, the Ducks had allowed an average of four goals per game, but on this night, they delivered a commendable defensive performance that made a significant difference.
Looking ahead, the Blue Jackets are scheduled to face the Seattle Kraken on Tuesday, while the Ducks prepare for a home game against the Vegas Golden Knights on Wednesday.
