PULLMAN, Wash.
John Mateer demonstrated an outstanding performance, throwing four touchdown passes and adding another score with his legs, leading the No. 20 Washington State Cougars to a decisive 49-28 win over Utah State on Saturday night.

Wayshawn Parker was instrumental in the victory, amassing 149 rushing yards on just 11 carries, including a highlight 75-yard sprint for a touchdown and another short rush that capped off an impressive evening for the offense. Kyle Williams emerged as a key target, reeling in three of Mateer’s touchdown passes as the Cougars improved to 8-1, marking their fourth consecutive victory after a setback against Boise State earlier in the season.

Mateer had a productive outing, completing 18 of his 24 passes for 179 yards, in addition to contributing 55 rushing yards on 13 carries. As a team, Washington State dominated the ground, accumulating a total of 303 rushing yards throughout the contest.

For Utah State (2-7), Derrick Jameson showcased his speed with a remarkable 72-yard touchdown run. Quarterback Spencer Petras completed 28 of 45 passes for 208 yards, securing two touchdowns despite throwing an interception. Running back Herschel Turner also made his mark with 85 rushing yards on 16 attempts, but it wasn’t enough to turn the tide for the Aggies.
