LINCOLN, Neb. — Juwan Gary contributed significantly to Nebraska’s victory over Bethune-Cookman on Saturday night, recording 11 points, nine rebounds, and five steals. Connor Essegian was pivotal in the closing moments, going a perfect 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the last 38 seconds, helping secure a final score of 63-58 for the Cornhuskers.

Brice Williams added to Nebraska’s efforts with 10 points in the matchup, improving their record to 2-0 for the season.

In the first half, Bethune-Cookman took an early lead with David Onanina scoring consecutive baskets in the paint for a 12-6 advantage at the 14-minute mark. However, the Cornhuskers quickly rallied, dominating the next segment of play by scoring 19 of the subsequent 25 points, culminating in a seven-point lead as Braxton Meah executed a dunk with 2:39 remaining. Nebraska held a 29-24 edge at halftime after a late layup from Ahron Ulis.

The second half saw Williams make two three-pointers in rapid succession, helping the Cornhuskers establish their largest lead of the game at 16 points, thanks to a 9-0 run with 13:55 left on the clock. Unfortunately for Nebraska, they fell into a scoring drought that lasted over four minutes, allowing Bethune-Cookman to narrow the gap. Kalil Camara’s three-pointer brought the Wildcats to within three points at 51-48 with 6:49 remaining, but the Wildcats could not convert, experiencing another four-minute scoring freeze.

Gianni Hunt led the Wildcats with 10 points and added six rebounds and four assists. Jesus Carralero Martin also had a noteworthy performance, contributing nine points, four rebounds, four assists, two steals, and two blocks.

Nebraska’s advantage at the free-throw line was significant; they outscored Bethune-Cookman 21-5, shooting a strong 81% from the charity stripe.
