CARROLLTON, Ga. — In an exciting United Athletic Conference clash, Tarleton State triumphed over West Georgia with a score of 38-21 on Saturday, demonstrating their prowess as they currently sit atop the conference standings while West Georgia searches for their first conference win.
The Texans (8-2, 5-1) kicked off the scoring early in the game thanks to a 20-yard scoop-and-score by Bam Smith, making an immediate impact on the field.
As the first quarter came to a close, West Georgia (3-7, 0-7) managed to equalize when Dylan Gary caught a 16-yard touchdown pass from Quincy Casey. However, Tarleton State swiftly regained control of the game as Kayvon Britten contributed two short rushing touchdowns of 4 yards and 1 yard, extending their lead to 21-7.
The Wolves responded with determination, narrowing the gap with a 27-yard touchdown connection between Davin Wydner and T.J. Lockley. Despite this, Gabalis continued to fuel the Texans’ momentum by throwing a 42-yard touchdown pass to Darius Cooper, pushing the score to 28-14 in the third quarter.
Even as the Texans appeared to be cruising, their lead was a slim 31-21 before Gabalis struck again, finding Cody Jackson for a 17-yard touchdown pass halfway through the fourth quarter to finalize the score at 38-21.
Victor Gabalis had an impressive performance, completing 20 passes out of 28 attempts for a total of 242 yards. His key target, Darius Cooper, had a standout game, securing five receptions for 117 yards.
On the opposing side, Wydner completed 17 of his 32 passes for 174 yards, registering two touchdown passes but also facing the challenge of two interceptions. Casey contributed with 3 completions in 6 attempts for 37 yards, including a touchdown but also an interception.
The matchup illustrated the contrasting fortunes of both teams this season, as Tarleton State continues to excel while West Georgia strives to turn their season around.
