Former broadcaster for the Portland Trail Blazers, Brian Wheeler, known affectionately as “Wheels,” has passed away at the age of 62.
Wheeler, who served as the radio voice of the Trail Blazers from 1998 until 2019, died on Friday after battling a prolonged illness.
Prior to his two-decade tenure with the Trail Blazers, Wheeler worked with several teams including the Sacramento Kings, the Seattle SuperSonics, and the Chicago Bulls.
His signature catchphrase, “Boom shakalaka!” became a fan favorite during his broadcasts.
In recognition of his work in sports broadcasting, Wheeler was named Oregon Sportscaster of the Year in 2007.
The Trail Blazers paid tribute to him with a statement acknowledging his deep passion for basketball and the team.
They noted, “His love for the game and passion for the Trail Blazers came through in every radio call, making each play a thrill for every listener tuning in.”
Wheeler leaves behind a legacy as a respected figure in sports commentary, remembered for his vibrant personality and enthusiasm for the game.
