NEWARK, Del. — In an exciting matchup on Saturday, Delaware triumphed over Rhode Island with a final score of 24-21, effectively halting the Rams’ impressive winning streak at seven games. Nick Minicucci played a crucial role in the victory, contributing one touchdown pass in addition to one rushing touchdown, while Marcus Yarns showcased his skills with a dominant performance, rushing for 174 yards and securing one score of his own.

The contest began with Rhode Island taking an early lead, establishing a 14-7 advantage after Devin Hightower recovered a fumble and returned it for a 21-yard touchdown late in the first quarter. However, Delaware responded with vigor. Yarns made a significant impact by scoring on a 27-yard run that came from a direct snap, surpassing the 2,000-yard mark in career rushing. Nate Reed later chipped in with a 25-yard field goal just before halftime, shifting the momentum to Delaware with a 17-14 lead.

As the game progressed into the third quarter, Minicucci connected with Jake Thaw, who made a remarkable leaping catch in the corner of the end zone for a seven-yard touchdown, increasing Delaware’s lead to 24-14.

In a last-ditch effort, Rhode Island’s Hunter Helms threw a 20-yard touchdown pass to Greg Gaines III with just 6:23 remaining in the game, narrowing the score to 24-21. However, Delaware’s defense remained steadfast, and a crucial interception by Gavin Moul at the Rhode Island 37-yard line dashed the Rams’ hopes of a comeback in the dying moments of the match.

Minicucci’s performance included completing 25 of his 34 passes for a total of 187 yards, while Helms completed 15 of 23 passes for 181 yards, recording two touchdown passes but also throwing one interception. The Rams, who entered the game ranked 10th in the FCS coaches poll, struggled on the ground, managing only 89 rushing yards throughout the contest.
