DAYTON, Ohio — In a thrilling contest on Saturday, Logan Gingg delivered an outstanding performance, rushing for a career-high 175 yards and scoring the only touchdown for San Diego as they triumphed over Dayton with a final score of 16-10.
Gingg’s touchdown was a pivotal moment that followed a crucial turnover. Giovanni Iovino made an impressive play by forcing a fumble, which was then recovered by Malachi Cooper at the USD 44-yard line. On the subsequent drive, quarterback Grant Sergent connected with Ja’seem Reed on a 40-yard pass that set up the Toreros at the Dayton 5-yard line, where Gingg snagged a touchdown just one play later.
In addition to Gingg’s remarkable game, Aidan Lehman contributed significantly by kicking three field goals, including one that was initiated by Gingg’s remarkable 53-yard run, the longest of his career.
San Diego (6-3, 4-2 Pioneer) has now secured victories in its last six contests against Dayton (5-4, 3-3). Entering this matchup, Dayton was noted for its strong defensive record, leading the FCS in total defense with an average of 244.8 yards allowed per game and just 129.8 passing yards. Despite their formidable defense, the Flyers struggled with turnovers, losing three fumbles—two of which were caused by Iovino—as well as an interception during the game.
Late in the contest, Dayton’s Drew VanVleet managed to throw a 5-yard touchdown pass to Donovan Weatherly, which marked the Flyers’ only score of the game. Additionally, Luke Hansen demonstrated his prowess on the ground, accumulating 121 yards on 23 carries for Dayton.
