MUNICH — NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell addressed German fans eager about the possibility of the league making its way to Berlin, confidently stating, “Believe it.”
Last year, the NFL marked its inaugural regular-season game in Germany with an event in Munich, followed by two games in Frankfurt in 2023. This week, Munich will host the clash between the New York Giants and the Carolina Panthers, which will be the fifth and final overseas game of the current season.
During a Q&A session with fans in Munich, Goodell remarked, “I often tell people not to believe rumors, but in this case, I might say, ‘Believe it.’ We’re actively working on it, although nothing is set in stone. We truly believe that Berlin would be a fantastic addition to our lineup, and we are putting serious effort into making that happen. It’s essential to mention that this doesn’t mean we won’t return to Frankfurt and Munich as well.”
Recent reports from German news outlet dpa and broadcaster RTL indicated that discussions are ongoing among Berlin’s city government regarding plans for a potential game.
Initially, Berlin did not bid to host regular-season NFL games. In 2021, the league selected Frankfurt, Munich, and Duesseldorf as the three finalists, with Duesseldorf yet to host a game.
Goodell shared a personal connection to Berlin, recounting his involvement in the NFL’s first exhibition game in Germany in 1990, which took place less than a year after the Berlin Wall fell. That game featured the Los Angeles Rams facing the Kansas City Chiefs at the Olympiastadion in Berlin. “It remains one of my favorite events,” he stated, praising the enthusiastic German fans.
In December, NFL team owners voted to allow the league to organize eight international games each season, although Goodell has expressed a long-term vision of expanding that number to 16 games annually.
This season, the NFL made its debut in Brazil and has plans for its first game in Spain next year, set to take place in Madrid. Additionally, London has hosted three games during the current season.
