PHILADELPHIA — Jalen Hurts has been cleared to play for the Philadelphia Eagles in their matchup against the Dallas Cowboys, despite some concerns about an ankle issue. Coach Nick Sirianni confirmed on Friday that Hurts was experiencing discomfort, but reassured fans that the quarterback’s status is not in question for the upcoming game.
Initially, Hurts was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday, categorized with a rest designation that raised some eyebrows. However, he fully participated on both Thursday and Friday, leading to his current clearance to play on Sunday. When questioned about the rest designation, Sirianni explained, “Yeah, he was dealing with — it was on the injury report. Dealing with the ankle. And, you know, making sure we’re cautious with everything.”
Confusion arose when reporters noted that the ankle issue was not explicitly mentioned on the injury report, prompting additional questions about Hurts’ condition. Sirianni quickly clarified, insisting, “No. Rest,” effectively dismissing any concerns about an injury impacting his play.
Hurts experienced a brief moment of discomfort after being sacked while scrambling during last week’s game against Jacksonville, but he didn’t seek medical attention at that time and continued playing without interruption. During the media viewing portion of practice earlier in the week, he sat out individual drills alongside backup quarterbacks Kenny Pickett and Tanner McKee.
Meanwhile, the Cowboys face significant challenges of their own. Star quarterback Dak Prescott will not play against the Eagles due to a torn hamstring, which may require him to undergo season-ending surgery. Prescott sustained his injury during last week’s defeat to the Atlanta Falcons, leaving Cooper Rush to take the helm in his absence.
In addition to Hurts, his primary receivers, A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, are also confirmed to play. While Brown has been managing a knee issue, Smith has been dealing with a hamstring problem but has been cleared as well.
