PHILADELPHIA — On Friday, Preston Mattingly was elevated to the position of general manager for the Philadelphia Phillies, working under president of baseball operations, Dave Dombrowski. This announcement follows the tenure of Sam Fuld, who had been serving as general manager since December 2020. Fuld is currently pursuing his Master of Business Administration at the prestigious Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania and is set to transition to president of business operations upon the completion of his degree in May 2026. During this interim period, Fuld will collaborate with Mattingly in managing general manager responsibilities.

At 37 years old, Mattingly has a rich background in baseball. He played in the minor leagues from 2006 to 2011 before attending Lamar University, where he not only earned his bachelor’s degree in 2016 but also captained the university’s basketball team. His professional journey included a tenure with the San Diego Padres from 2017 to 2021, where he advanced to the position of coordinator for major league advance scouting and game planning.

In September 2021, Mattingly joined the Phillies as the director of player development, and just last November, he was promoted to assistant general manager of player development. Alongside Mattingly’s promotion, the organization also announced other key promotions within its ranks, with Luke Murton taking on the role of director of player development, while Edwar Gonzalez steps up as director of hitting development.

Preston Mattingly is the son of former baseball icon Don Mattingly, who established himself as a six-time All-Star with the New York Yankees during his playing career from 1982 to 1995. After retiring as a player, Don Mattingly took on managerial roles with the Los Angeles Dodgers from 2011 to 2015 and the Miami Marlins from 2016 to 2022.
