ST. JOHN’S, Antigua — Authorities in Antigua and Barbuda are reaching out to officials in London in hopes of resolving the recent murder of a local parliamentarian. The body of Asot Michael, 54, a well-known and often polarizing former government minister, was discovered at his beachfront residence on Tuesday, leading to a shockwave across the Caribbean nation.

On Wednesday, Cabinet members convened and decided to request assistance from British authorities. They also announced that a formal funeral would be held for Michael. The nation, having a history as a former British territory, often relies on London for support in significant criminal cases.

As of now, there have been no arrests or identified motives related to the homicide, which marks a rare and unsettling incident in Antiguan politics. Police Commissioner Atlee Rodney confirmed that investigators have interviewed multiple individuals connected to the case, but he withheld further insights into the circumstances surrounding Michael’s death.

Michael was not only a politician but also a businessman whose family owns local businesses, including a casino and several retail outlets. Rising through the ranks of the Antigua & Barbuda Party, he was recognized for his philanthropic efforts, particularly during the holiday season when he distributed food, toys, and essential goods to his community.

His campaign manager during the recent 2023 elections, Adrian Williams, highlighted Michael’s generosity, describing him as having “a big heart” and a genuine connection to the people he served.

Michael held various ministerial positions throughout his career, including titles related to public works, tourism, economic development, and energy. Nonetheless, he faced significant controversies, culminating in his expulsion from the party in 2022 amid allegations, including an international bribery investigation, which he has consistently denied.

Despite the backlash, Michael’s spirit remained unbroken; he successfully contested the 2023 elections as an independent candidate to reclaim his position in Parliament. However, his time in the legislature was often marred by conflict, as he was ejected on multiple occasions for disruptive behavior and was even suspended by the House speaker in 2023 for alleged misconduct.

Additionally, Michael was facing a battery charge stemming from an incident earlier in the year where he allegedly assaulted a police officer during a carnival, a claim he denied.

Prime Minister Gaston Browne expressed his sorrow over the unexpected loss, stating he felt “saddened and disturbed” by Michael’s passing. He acknowledged that although their relationship had soured at one point, he appreciated their reconnection earlier this year, embracing him as both a friend and a political ally.
