RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Barbora Krejcikova secured the final semifinal position at the WTA Finals with a victory over Coco Gauff, winning 7-5, 6-4 on Thursday. This result led to the elimination of the tournament’s second seed, Iga Swiatek, from the competition.

Krejcikova’s victory allowed her to claim the top spot in the Orange Group, and she will now face Zheng Qinwen in the semifinals scheduled for Friday. Gauff, having performed well, will compete against Aryna Sabalenka, the winner of the Purple Group.

Earlier in the day, Swiatek delivered a dominant performance against alternate Daria Kasatkina, winning swiftly with a score of 6-1, 6-0 in less than an hour. However, for her to advance from the Orange Group, Krejcikova would have needed to lose to Gauff. With Krejcikova, Gauff, and Swiatek all finishing with a record of 2-1, Swiatek’s elimination came as a result of her lower set-winning percentage.

Kasatkina stepped in as a replacement for American Jessica Pegula, who withdrew from the tournament due to a left knee injury sustained earlier in the week.

“I’m professional enough to always give 100% no matter what the stakes are,” remarked Swiatek, emphasizing her commitment to competition.
