Michigan official involved in 2020 election issues fails in write-in bid

BELLAIRE, Mich. — In a notable election outcome, the clerk of a small Michigan county, known for its association with unfounded election conspiracy theories during the 2020 presidential race, was unsuccessful in her write-in bid to retain her position.

Sheryl Guy, the Antrim County Clerk, had previously announced her decision not to pursue reelection but chose to enter the race following the Republican primary held in August. Despite garnering around 5,500 write-in votes, she ultimately lost to GOP candidate Victoria Bishop, who secured votes at nearly twice the rate. The results were covered by the Traverse City Record-Eagle.

In a light-hearted comment directed at her critics, Guy remarked, “At least they won’t question these results.” This statement referenced past controversies that emerged after Antrim County’s election outcomes in 2020 were initially reported incorrectly, leading to unfounded claims of widespread fraud.

During the 2020 presidential election, Antrim County mistakenly announced a surprising win for Democrat Joe Biden, but this was later attributed to human error and swiftly corrected to reflect that Donald Trump had actually prevailed in the county. Importantly, there was no legitimate evidence of fraud linked to the voting machines.

Victoria Bishop, who has shown support for various election conspiracy theories, ran her campaign promising to perform a hand-count of every ballot. Upon learning of her victory, Bishop expressed her eagerness to serve the citizens of the county, saying, “I’m looking forward to serving all the people of our beloved county and implementing new technologies to make all areas of the Clerk’s office more efficient at lower costs to the taxpayers of our county.”
