Philadelphia Union parts ways with veteran coach Jim Curtin from MLS

PHILADELPHIA — The Philadelphia Union of Major League Soccer (MLS) have made the decision to part ways with coach Jim Curtin after an 11-year tenure with the team.

The announcement regarding Curtin’s departure was made on Thursday, alongside news that the Union is actively searching for a new head coach. The club noted that information about the interim coaching staff will be shared in the near future.

Jay Sugarman, the owner of the Union, expressed his best wishes for Curtin, highlighting him as a “remarkable leader” and acknowledging his essential role in the team’s accomplishments throughout his time at the club.

Curtin took up the coaching position in 2014 and achieved a landmark season in 2022, guiding the Union to their inaugural MLS Cup final. Under his leadership, the team recorded its highest number of wins (19), goals scored (72), and fewest goals allowed (26) in a single season.

He received the MLS Coach of the Year award in both 2020 and 2022, leading the Union to first place in the Eastern Conference on both occasions. However, this season saw a significant decline in performance, with the Union securing only nine victories, dropping to 12th place in the Eastern Conference, and missing out on playoff participation for the first time since 2017.

Curtin’s achievements and contributions to the team will certainly be remembered as the Union move forward in their search for new leadership.
