RALEIGH, N.C. — This week, a shooter targeted vehicles on a busy highway close to North Carolina’s capital, resulting in at least one person injured, as confirmed by law enforcement authorities.
Multiple witnesses reported hearing gunfire on Interstate 40 in the areas of Raleigh and Cary around 5 a.m. during the peak hours of morning traffic on Wednesday, according to the Raleigh police department. Authorities noted a total of six shooting incidents within Wake County, with two occurring on Monday and four reported on Wednesday, all believed to be related.
As of now, police have not disclosed any details about a potential suspect.
On Wednesday, no injuries were recorded, but a woman was shot in the leg on I-40 earlier in the week on Monday morning, as reported by WRAL-TV.
Officials have stated that they do not suspect the shootings are related to road rage, according to ABC 11. The shooter is believed to have used a handgun during the incidents.
Raleigh Deputy Chief Rico Boyce emphasized the urgency of finding the suspect, noting the heavy traffic on I-40 during rush hours. He stated during a news conference that police presence along the interstate will remain until they locate the individual responsible for the shootings.
Additionally, another shooting incident was reported on Thursday morning, where shots were fired into a vehicle in southwest Raleigh, roughly 2 miles away from I-40. The investigation is ongoing, and police have not determined if this incident is connected to the shooting spree on the interstate.
