Dak Prescott, the prominent quarterback for the Dallas Cowboys, is dealing with a concerning hamstring injury which has been identified as a partial tear connected to the bone, according to an insider’s report. There is a possibility that surgery may be necessary for Prescott, which raises concerns about his timeline for recovery.

This type of injury, referred to as a partial avulsion, may sideline him for an extended period, potentially exceeding the four-game minimum that would follow placing him on injured reserve. The insider, who requested to remain unnamed due to the team’s reluctance to release details about Prescott’s condition, confirmed that they are considering several treatment options, possibly including season-ending surgery. The NFL Network was the first to break the news regarding the seriousness of the injury.

This scenario brings to mind a past incident from two years ago when former Cowboys left tackle Tyron Smith suffered a full avulsion—a complete tear requiring surgical intervention—that forced him to miss 13 games. Prescott incurred his injury during the third quarter of the Cowboys’ recent 27-21 defeat to the Atlanta Falcons. With a current record of 3-5, the team is gearing up for Cooper Rush to take over as the starter for the foreseeable future, beginning with a crucial matchup against divisional rival Philadelphia at home this Sunday.

Rush has filled in successfully during previous absences. He stepped in when Prescott suffered a thumb injury in the opening week two seasons ago, leading the team to a 4-1 record during that stretch. Additionally, Rush secured a victory in 2021 when Prescott was sidelined due to a calf strain.

Despite achieving playoff berths for three consecutive years with a solid 12-5 record, the Cowboys are currently trailing behind Washington and the Eagles, sitting three losses away from contention within the NFC East standings. If Prescott is unable to return soon, it would mark a significant pattern for him, as this would be the second occasion within five years that the 2016 AP Offensive Rookie of the Year has faced substantial time away from the field. Prescott previously sustained a severe ankle injury in Week 5 of the 2020 season, causing him to miss a total of 11 games.
