Predators not taken aback by Ovechkin’s latest game-winning goal for the Capitals

WASHINGTON — In a memorable clash, Alex Ovechkin’s performance handed the Nashville Predators another loss and continued the Washington Capitals’ successful run. This outcome was anticipated by those familiar with Ovechkin’s prowess over the years.

Predators’ head coach Andrew Brunette, who shared the ice with Ovechkin during his last seven seasons as a player, remarked, “You knew it was coming. You’re on the bench and I guess I’ve seen him too many times. I’ve played against him, I’ve coached against him, I’ve watched him, and he just finds that opportunity. When it’s on his stick, it’s gone.” He added, “That’s a big-time shot from arguably the greatest goal-scorer of all time.”

With his latest goal, Ovechkin is now just six goals shy of surpassing Jaromir Jagr’s record for the most career game-winning goals. His 130th goal propelled the Capitals to a 9-3-0 record this season, while sending the Predators to their ninth defeat in 13 games.

“It (stinks) that he scored against us tonight and netted the game-winner, but it’s impressive to see a player still producing at this age,” commented Predators forward Steven Stamkos, who spent his first 16 seasons with the Tampa Bay Lightning. “To keep doing it like this is quite remarkable.”

Ovechkin’s recent form has seen him score six goals over his last five outings, bringing his career total to 861. He is now just 34 away from breaking Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing record, once thought to be insurmountable.

The Capitals’ captain has also achieved the feat of becoming only the third player aged 39 or older to score in five or more consecutive games, joining the ranks of Johnny Bucyk in 1974 and Brett Hull in 2003.

“He’s destined to become the all-time leader in goals soon,” Stamkos noted. “He’s a generational goal scorer and someone I have always admired when it comes to scoring goals. It’s the hardest thing to do in the NHL, and he has mastered it like no other.”

Continuing his impressive streak, Ovechkin has scored in every game the Capitals have worn their black “Screaming Eagle” jersey this season. This particular matchup was special as it marked the first time the team wore these jerseys in their 50th season. The “Great Eight” has now scored in all eight games while donning this uniform.

“I don’t know the stats, but I love this jersey,” Ovechkin expressed. “The fans love it, so it’s pretty cool.” Earlier in the game, he also assisted Aliaksei Protas, bringing his season totals to eight goals and eight assists.

“I’m always having fun,” Ovechkin stated. “When you’re winning games and creating scoring opportunities, it makes it even more enjoyable to play.”
