Nellie Pou, a Democratic candidate, has successfully secured a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives for New Jersey following an election held on Wednesday.
She emerged victorious in a race for the position left open after the passing of veteran Representative Bill Pascrell Jr., who died earlier this year.
In the contest, Pou faced off against Republican candidate Billy Prempeh, along with two other challengers, ultimately coming out on top.
Pou brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having served as a state legislator for many years.
Her legislative career began in the New Jersey Assembly, where she represented constituents from 1997 until 2011.
She then transitioned to the state Senate, where she has continued her public service from 2011 to the present day.
The announcement of her victory was made at 1:47 p.m. EST, confirming her position as a new member of the U.S. House.
