COLUMBIA, S.C. — South Carolina has reinstated Ashlyn Watkins, a forward, after legal charges of assault and kidnapping against her were recently dropped. This decision comes as her suspension from team activities ends, allowing her to rejoin the squad.
Watkins faced suspension following her arrest on August 31, although she was still able to attend classes during that time. The university announced the news with a brief statement confirming her return to practice on Wednesday, effective immediately after the court dismissed her charges on November 1.
Due to her suspension, Watkins was unable to participate in team workouts and missed significant events including a visit to the White House in September to honor the previous season’s national championship win. Furthermore, she was absent when the top-ranked Gamecocks faced Michigan in a 68-62 victory on Monday night to kick off the new season.
Standing at 6-foot-3, Watkins is recognized for her impressive abilities, particularly her defensive skills. Last season, she led the Southeastern Conference with a remarkable 91 blocks and is credited with achieving the first two dunks in the history of the program, accomplishing one each during her freshman and sophomore years.
With the departure of 6-foot-7 forward Kamilla Cardoso to the WNBA after being selected in the first round by the Chicago Sky, Watkins is anticipated to take on a pivotal role in the team’s frontcourt.
The Gamecocks are scheduled to compete against No. 9 N.C. State this Sunday in Charlotte, North Carolina.
