Republican Representative Burgess Owens secured his reelection to a U.S. House seat from Utah on Wednesday.
He triumphed over Democratic challenger Katrina Fallick-Wang to claim his third term representing the central Utah area.
Owens, a former professional football player who earned a Super Bowl title with the New York Jets and Oakland Raiders, is one of just four Black Republicans currently serving in the U.S. House.
He is known for his opposition to diversity and inclusion mandates in higher education and notably referred to Vice President Kamala Harris as a candidate representing “DEI” values during the previous summer.
Additionally, he holds positions on both the House Education and Workforce and the House Transportation and Infrastructure committees.
The declaration of Owens’ victory came at 4:34 a.m. EST, highlighting his successful campaign.
