HINWIL, Switzerland — Sauber has announced the signing of 20-year-old Brazilian driver Gabriel Bortoleto for the upcoming Formula 1 season, where he will be paired with Nico Hülkenberg on the team.
This decision indicates that current drivers Valtteri Bottas and Zhou Guanyu will no longer have their positions in F1 for the year 2025. Neither driver has managed to accumulate any points this season, reflecting the struggles of Sauber’s car in terms of competitiveness.
Bortoleto, who currently leads the championship in Formula 2 with only two rounds remaining, represents a mix of youthful vigor and seasoned experience alongside the 37-year-old Hülkenberg. It is worth noting that the German automotive company Audi is set to take control of Sauber, rebranding it as the Audi works team starting from 2026.
Commenting on his new role, Bortoleto expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “This is one of the most exciting projects in motorsport, if not in all of sports. Joining a team that combines the rich motorsport history of Sauber and Audi is a true honor.”
He added, “Beyond simply being a member, I aim to grow with this ambitious project and reach the pinnacle of motorsport. I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity given to me by the team and for the chance to work alongside an experienced driver like Nico.”
Bortoleto has displayed his talent by clinching the F3 championship in the previous season, further underscoring his potential in the sport.
