Democrat Nanette Diaz Barragan has officially secured a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives representing California.
On Wednesday, she triumphed over Republican contender Roger Groh in the predominantly Democratic 44th District, which encompasses sections of Los Angeles and Long Beach as well as the Port of Los Angeles.
Currently, she serves as the chair of the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, highlighting her influential role within the legislative body.
First elected to the U.S. House in November 2016, Barragan made history as the first Latina to ever hold this position for the district.
Her background includes being the daughter of immigrant parents from Mexico, which shapes her policy interests, particularly in areas such as immigration reform and environmental issues.
The announcement of her victory was made at 12:11 a.m. EST.
