Democratic Representative Pramila Jayapal secured her reelection to a seat in the U.S. House on Tuesday, reaffirming her longstanding position. Jayapal first took office in 2016, representing Washington’s 7th Congressional District, which encompasses Seattle and its nearby areas. With this victory, she is set to begin her fifth term in a seat that has consistently been held by a Democrat since 1979.

Previously a state senator in Washington, Jayapal made history as the first South Asian American woman elected to the U.S. House of Representatives. In her legislative role, she currently chairs the Congressional Progressive Caucus and is an active member of several key committees, including Judiciary, Education and Labor, as well as Budget.

The results were confirmed late into the night, with the announcement of Jayapal’s win coming at 11:55 p.m. EST. Her reelection highlights the continuing support from her district, where she has maintained a strong presence and influence in Congress.
