MONTREAL — Matt Coronato delivered an impressive performance with two goals as the Calgary Flames staged a comeback to defeat the Montreal Canadiens 3-2 in a thrilling overtime match on Tuesday night.

Coronato leveled the score with just 2:46 left in the regulation period, skillfully maneuvering into the slot and sending the puck off the post and into the net. He capped off his remarkable night by scoring the game-winner a mere seven seconds into the overtime period.

Also contributing to Calgary’s victory was Connor Zary, who found the net for his team, marking the Flames’ second victory out of their last seven games. In net, Dustin Wolf made 21 saves to secure the win.

For the Canadiens, Joel Armia netted a short-handed goal and Brendan Gallagher also scored. Armia provided a key assist, while Sam Montembeault had a busy night, stopping 32 shots as Montreal’s losing streak extended to four games.

The scoring began early in the second period when Zary capitalized on a loose puck in the crease, firing it past Montembeault just 4:20 in. Gallagher responded later in the period, slipping the puck through Wolf’s pads at the 16:23 mark, tying the game.

Armia later put the Canadiens ahead 2-1 with a goal at 5:56 into the third period, finishing a play from Jake Evans after a hooking penalty was called on rookie Lane Hutson.

Noteworthy moments during the game included Coronato stepping up after Calgary couldn’t convert on a power-play opportunity and ended up conceding while shorthanded. Calgary had entered the matchup with the 22nd-ranked power play in the league at a rate of 16.2%.

Montembeault showcased an impressive turnaround after facing criticism from prior games, where he had allowed nine goals across the last two Tuesdays in two disastrous outings.

In a pivotal moment, Gallagher had what seemed to be a second goal of the night that would have given Montreal a 3-1 lead with 8:21 remaining in the third period, but it was ultimately disallowed after Calgary’s challenge determined the play was offside.

Statistically, the Canadiens dominated the first period with a 15-10 shot advantage over the Flames, but Calgary turned the tables in the second, outshooting Montreal 13-5.

Looking ahead, the Flames are set to visit the Bruins on Thursday, while the Canadiens will take on the Devils also on Thursday.
