Texas Tech begins its centennial season by defeating Bethune-Cookman 94-61

LUBBOCK, Texas — In an impressive season opener for both teams, Texas Tech dominated Bethune-Cookman with a decisive score of 94-61 on Tuesday night, led by standout performances from Kerwin Walton and JT Toppin, who scored 21 and 19 points respectively.

Chance McMillian and Darrion Williams also contributed significantly to the team’s success, each adding 17 points, while Kevin Overton chipped in with 10 points. The Red Raiders exhibited strong shooting, hitting 36 of 63 attempts (57%) from the floor and 16 of 30 (53%) from beyond the arc.

For the Wildcats, Reggie Ward Jr. was the top scorer with 15 points, followed closely by Brayon Freeman, who added 12 points to their tally.

After Ward Jr. made a layup that narrowed the gap to 33-28 with 4:50 left in the first half, Bethune-Cookman struggled offensively. Texas Tech then went on a commanding 17-point run without allowing the Wildcats to score again, closing the half with a comfortable 50-28 lead.

During the pivotal stretch of the game, Williams, Devan Cambridge, McMillian, and Walton each hit 3-pointers, emphasizing the Red Raiders’ offensive prowess.

This game marked the beginning of Texas Tech’s 100th year of basketball, celebrating a rich history that began with their first game on January 25, 1925. The matchup was particularly notable as it was only the second time that Texas Tech and Bethune-Cookman faced off, with the previous meeting in 2019 resulting in a 79-44 victory for the Red Raiders.
