NEW YORK — The “OMG” spirit is set to make its mark at Cooperstown.
Following an exhilarating journey to the National League Championship Series last month, the New York Mets have generously gifted a blue-and-orange OMG sign to the Baseball Hall of Fame.
This particular sign was prominently featured by the pitching staff during dugout celebrations, and it has now arrived at the Museum, where it will soon be showcased within the Your Team Today exhibit, celebrating “the excitement of the Mets’ 2024 season.”
The sign will become a permanent fixture in the Museum’s collection.
The term “OMG” is inspired by the catchy song performed by Mets infielder Jose Iglesias, who goes by the stage name Candelita.
The song became a recurring theme at Citi Field, turning into a team anthem throughout the season.
The signs, crafted by Jerome McCroy—a local artist and devoted Mets fan—gained national recognition as the wild-card Mets progressed through the playoffs.
Although they fell short of clinching a pennant, getting eliminated by the Los Angeles Dodgers, the eventual World Series champions, in Game 6 of the NLCS, the signs captured moments of joy for the team and its supporters.
When curating its 2024 postseason collection, the Hall of Fame reached out to the Mets for one of the signs.
In a collaborative spirit, the Mets consulted Iglesias and pitcher Luis Severino, the masterminds behind the signs, and they enthusiastically agreed to donate one.
Furthermore, another sign, used by the hitters to commemorate significant swings during games, will soon find its home in the Mets’ Hall of Fame located at Citi Field.
