Democratic Representative Nikema Williams successfully secured reelection for a seat in the U.S. House of Representatives, representing the state of Georgia, on Tuesday.
At 46 years old, Williams triumphed in her campaign for a third term in Atlanta’s 5th District, overcoming challenger Republican John Salvesen.
Williams first entered the political arena in 2020, stepping up to fill the vacancy left by the late Democratic Representative John Lewis, who was a prominent civil rights leader and served in that role for over three decades.
In addition to her congressional duties, Williams holds the position of chair of the Georgia Democratic Party.
Media outlets reported her victory shortly after polls closed, declaring her the winner at 8:00 p.m. EST.
