SAO PAULO — The Brazilian soccer team Flamengo publicly expressed its support for winger Bruno Henrique on Tuesday amid an ongoing investigation into match-fixing that saw several federal police agents visiting the team’s training facility in Rio de Janeiro.

Reports from local media indicate that authorities are probing substantial betting activity that anticipated Henrique receiving a booking during a 2-1 defeat to Santos in the Brazilian league last year. The 33-year-old player was given a yellow card late in that match and subsequently received a red card.

In its official statement, Flamengo affirmed its commitment to providing “total support” for Bruno Henrique, acknowledging his innocence and emphasizing the trust they have in him. “As with anyone else, he is entitled to a presumption of innocence,” the club stated.

The club further mentioned that they had not been granted access to the details of the investigation, which remains confidential. Additionally, Flamengo assured fans that their athlete would continue his professional responsibilities as normal.

Prior to the investigation, Henrique was slated to participate in an upcoming Brazilian league match against Cruzeiro on Wednesday.

While Brazil’s federal police confirmed their visit to Flamengo’s training complex, they refrained from commenting on whether Henrique is specifically a target of the investigation. A representative for the player has yet to release any statements regarding the situation.

Bruno Henrique is viewed as a legendary figure within the club, having played a pivotal role in securing two of Flamengo’s three Copa Libertadores titles.

In a related incident earlier this year, another Brazilian soccer player was implicated in a match-fixing controversy connected to sports betting. Lucas Paquetá, currently with West Ham and the Brazilian national team, faced charges from English soccer authorities over allegations that he intentionally received yellow cards in Premier League matches to manipulate betting markets. Paquetá has denied any misconduct.

Last year, a separate investigation in the state of Goias resulted in charges against 15 players from both the top two divisions and local leagues, accusing them of allegedly manipulating sports competitions. Many of these players faced suspensions from participating in Brazilian soccer.
