Real Madrid and AC Milan came together in a poignant tribute to the victims of the tragic floods that struck Valencia, prior to their Champions League clash on Tuesday.
Players from both clubs took to the field donned in jerseys featuring the phrase “We are all Valencia,” with the message printed in Spanish on Real Madrid’s kits and in Italian on those worn by AC Milan.
At the Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, a large banner representing the Valencia region adorned the stands, covering multiple sections in the midfield area, while attendees observed a moment of silence before the game commenced.
Additionally, a banner reading “We are all Valencia” was prominently displayed by Madrid’s fan group behind one of the goals in support of those affected.
Recent flash floods, triggered by heavy rainfall in eastern Spain, led to the tragic deaths of over 200 individuals and wreaked havoc across the Valencia region, trapping numerous people in their vehicles, homes, and workplaces.
In response to this unprecedented disaster, Real Madrid made a significant donation of 1 million euros to aid the flood victims.
The match marked Madrid’s first game since their 4-0 defeat against Barcelona in the Spanish league classic on October 26, after their scheduled match against Valencia was postponed due to the flooding.
Carlo Ancelotti, the coach of Real Madrid, expressed during a press conference on Monday that he felt it inappropriate to discuss soccer under the current circumstances in Valencia.
The devastating floods have also disrupted numerous other sporting events throughout Spain.
Before the match, fans at the Bernabeu voiced their discontent with loud jeers during the UEFA Champions League anthem, following the club’s decision to boycott the Ballon d’Or ceremony after their player Vinícius Júnior did not receive the coveted award.
