Dybala omitted from Argentina’s roster for World Cup qualifiers; Martínez returns from suspension

BUENOS AIRES — Paulo Dybala, the Roma forward, has been omitted from Argentina’s squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers, marking a significant change. Meanwhile, goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez sees his return after serving a suspension.

Coach Lionel Scaloni unveiled the squad on Tuesday, highlighting the notable exclusion of Dybala and the call-up of Valencia midfielder Enzo Barrenechea as the main surprises.

Martínez had faced a suspension imposed by FIFA for “offensive behavior” during two matches in September, which ruled him out for the last qualifiers. However, he is set to rejoin the team for the fixture against Paraguay on November 14, followed by a home game against Peru five days later.

Currently, Argentina tops the South American World Cup qualifying standings, accumulating 22 points from 10 matches. The top six teams in the qualification rounds will secure direct places in the 2026 World Cup.

Here is a look at the squad:

**Goalkeepers:** Emiliano Martinez (Aston Villa), Walter Benítez (PSV Eindhoven), Gerónimo Rulli (Marseille).

**Defenders:** Gonzalo Montiel (Sevilla), Nahuel Molina (Atletico Madrid), Cristian Romero (Tottenham), Germán Pezzella (River Plate), Nehuén Pérez (Porto), Leonardo Balerdi (Marseille), Nicolás Otamendi (Benfica), Lisandro Martínez (Manchester United), Nicolás Tagliafico (Lyon).

**Midfielders:** Leandro Paredes (Roma), Alexis Mac Allister (Liverpool), Enzo Fernández (Chelsea), Giovani Lo Celso (Real Betis), Nicolás Paz (Como), Exequiel Palacios (Bayer Leverkusen), Rodrigo de Paul (Atletico Madrid), Enzo Barrenechea (Valencia).

**Strikers:** Thiago Almada (Botafogo), Lionel Messi (Inter Miami), Nicolás González (Juventus), Alejandro Garnacho (Manchester United), Julián Álvarez (Atletico Madrid), Facundo Buonanotte (Leicester), Valentín Castellanos (Lazio), Lautaro Martínez (Inter Milan).

As the team gears up for these crucial matches, their performance will be closely monitored as they aim for a place in the upcoming World Cup.
