In Athens, Greece, law enforcement officials have conducted a series of raids resulting in the capture of a significant amount of explosives and firearms. These operations were part of efforts to dismantle a major criminal network involved in the storage and distribution of weapons throughout the capital.
During the raids carried out on a Monday across five different sites, authorities arrested five individuals and discovered an extensive collection of weaponry. Among the items seized were an alarming 60 kilograms (approximately 132 pounds) of ammonium dynamite, alongside military-grade explosives, various detonators, and multiple coils of slow-burning fuse cord.
In addition to the explosives, police confiscated a variety of firearms, including assault rifles and handguns. The operation also uncovered nearly 6,000 rounds of ammunition, alongside valuable assets such as gold coins and over 23,000 euros, which is roughly equivalent to $25,000 in cash.
The coordinated raids were prompted by recent arrests related to terrorism, particularly in connection with a lethal bombing incident that occurred in Athens the previous week. While authorities have not provided clear indications regarding the links between the bombers and the criminal networks suspected of supplying the explosives, the situation remains under close investigation.
