BLACKSBURG, Va. — In their season opener on Monday night, Virginia Tech triumphed over Delaware State with a commanding 83-60 victory. Toibu Lawal was the standout player for the Hokies, contributing an impressive 23 points, while Mylyjael Poteat added 14 points to the score. Jaydon Young also made a notable contribution with 13 points.
On the other side of the court, Martaz Robinson was the star for Delaware State, scoring a remarkable 30 points, heavily relying on his free throw accuracy with a 16-for-17 performance at the line. Despite Robinson’s efforts, the Hornets struggled to keep pace with the Hokies.
Midway through the second half, Delaware State had managed to cut the deficit to 49-43, thanks to a jump shot from Raymond Somerville and subsequent free throws from Robinson. However, the Hokies responded swiftly. Ben Burnham, Poteat, and Patrick Wessler each added to the scoring with pairs of free throws, and Tyler Johnson finished with a layup, establishing a solid 57-43 lead with 10:08 left in regulation. This lead grew to double digits and remained that way for the remainder of the game.
Virginia Tech further extended their lead to 20 points at 71-51 when Poteat converted one of his free throws with 5:02 on the clock. The Hokies had a strong start, racing out to a 21-6 advantage within the first six and a half minutes of the match before the Hornets managed to stabilize and close the halftime score to 40-32.
This impressive opening performance signals a promising start to the season for Virginia Tech as they look to build on this momentum.
