Arsenal Football Club announced on Monday that Edu Gaspar has stepped down from his position as sporting director.
Edu, who once played as a midfielder for the Gunners, initially returned to the club in 2019 as the technical director, later being elevated to sporting director in 2022.
His leadership has been instrumental in transforming Arsenal into a formidable competitor in the Premier League under manager Mikel Arteta over the past few seasons.
In his departure, Edu expressed his desire to explore “a different challenge,” though he did not elaborate on what this new opportunity might involve.
“This was an incredibly tough decision,” Edu stated in an official club announcement.
“Arsenal has provided me the chance to work alongside many remarkable individuals and to be part of something truly significant in the club’s history.
However, I feel it is time to explore new horizons. Arsenal will forever hold a special place in my heart, and I wish the club and its fans all the best moving forward.”
Josh Kroenke, co-chair of Arsenal, acknowledged Edu’s decision and commended his significant contributions and commitment to the club’s progress.
Kroenke remarked, “Change and growth are essential aspects of our club’s journey.
We remain dedicated to our ambitions of winning major trophies, and our succession plan will align with this ongoing goal.”
Edu had a notable playing career with Arsenal, making 127 appearances and being part of the legendary “Invincibles” squad led by Arsene Wenger, which went unbeaten throughout the 2003-04 season.
