SYDNEY — Starting next year, the Sydney marathon will officially join the prestigious World Marathon Majors series, becoming the seventh event in this celebrated lineup.
The announcement was made on Monday by the World Marathon Majors organization, highlighting the Sydney event’s impressive success, with over 20,000 finishers in its most recent edition held in September. After a rigorous three-year application period, Sydney has earned its spot alongside esteemed marathons in New York, London, Berlin, Boston, Tokyo, and Chicago, set to commence in 2025.
This inclusion marks a significant milestone, making Sydney the first city in the southern hemisphere to feature in this elite category. The marathon route showcases iconic Australian landmarks, allowing participants to experience the beauty of the city, including sights like the Harbour Bridge and the Opera House.
In the previous September marathon, Kenyan runner Brimin Misoi and Ethiopia’s Workanesh Gurmesa achieved notable victories, breaking records and showcasing their athletic prowess on the course.
Looking ahead, the next Sydney marathon is scheduled for August 31, promising to be another exciting event for both participants and spectators alike.
