NEW ORLEANS — Zion Williamson, forward for the Pelicans, was removed from the roster for the game against the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday evening.
The team reported that he is experiencing tightness in his right hamstring. This latest development leaves the Pelicans further shorthanded, as they were already without guards Dejounte Murray (due to a hand injury) and CJ McCollum (who is dealing with an issue in his right adductor), alongside forward Herb Jones (shoulder injury) and wing player Trey Murphy III (right hamstring).
Williamson had a standout performance in the previous game against Indiana, scoring 34 points and providing 10 assists, raising hopes for his contribution in the next matchup. However, he was not mentioned in the injury report released by New Orleans until just before the game began, even after coach Willie Green indicated that Williamson’s situation would be assessed following pre-game warm-ups.
Following his removal from the lineup, the Pelicans announced that Javonte Green would step in to start, joining only one other regular starter, wing Brandon Ingram.
In more positive news for the team, shooting guard Jordan Hawkins was cleared to play, despite dealing with persistent lower back tightness in recent days. He was also listed to start alongside guard Jose Alvarado and rookie center Yves Missi.
This game is the first in a back-to-back scenario for the Pelicans, with another matchup set against the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night.
