KAMPALA, Uganda — A tragic event unfolded in a refugee camp located in northern Uganda, where a lightning strike claimed the lives of fourteen individuals, according to authorities on Sunday.

The incident transpired on Saturday in the remote area of Lamwo District. Police spokesperson Kituuma Rusoke confirmed that another 34 people sustained injuries from the strike. As of now, the identities of the deceased remain undisclosed.

The victims were gathered at the Palabek settlement camp, which primarily shelters refugees fleeing from South Sudan, attending a prayer service inside a make-shift metal structure when the lightning struck.

In this East African nation, reports of fatal lightning strikes are frequent during the rainy seasons. Rusoke also mentioned that there were no reports of fires developing due to the lightning incident.
