Cornell Dominates Princeton in Ivy League Showdown
In a thrilling Ivy League matchup on Saturday, Jameson Wang led Cornell to a convincing 49-35 victory over Princeton. Wang threw two touchdown passes and added another on the ground during an explosive first quarter where Cornell jumped out to a 21-0 lead.
The Big Red, now holding a record of 3-4 overall and 2-2 in the Ivy League, managed to secure just their 38th win in the long-standing 106-game rivalry against the Tigers, who fell to 2-5 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Cornell’s dominance was evident as they established a 28-point advantage before Princeton could respond with a score.
The scoring opened with Wang orchestrating a 75-yard drive, culminating in an 8-yard rushing touchdown on the 11th play. Following a successful defensive stand in which they stifled Princeton’s fourth-and-one attempt at their own 34-yard line, Wang quickly found the end zone again. He connected with Samuel Musungu for a 28-yard gain and then with Ryder Kurtz for a 4-yard touchdown pass.
On Princeton’s subsequent drive, Cornell’s Hunter Sloan made a pivotal play by sacking quarterback Blaine Hipa for a 9-yard loss on a fourth-and-three situation at the Cornell 38-yard line. Wang then hit Kurtz for an 11-yard touchdown, marking the third touchdown in the opening quarter.
After forcing a punt on Princeton’s third possession, Cornell extended their lead as Eddy Tillman scored from the 2-yard line, making the score 28-0 early in the second quarter. By halftime, they had stretched their lead to 35-14 and entered the fourth quarter with a commanding 49-14 advantage.
In a late-game rally, Hipa showcased his skills by throwing for three touchdowns in the fourth quarter. He connected with Luke Colella for a 14-yard score, then found Charley Rossi for a 20-yard touchdown, followed once more by a 14-yard strike to Colella with just 14 seconds left, establishing the final score.
Wang’s performance included completing 23 of 30 passes for 262 yards, with three touchdowns against one interception, as well as rushing for an additional 31 yards and scoring. Musungu was a standout receiver with eight catches totaling 165 yards and one touchdown, while Kurtz had 38 yards on five receptions with two touchdowns.
Hipa ended the game with a passing line of 26 completions on 40 attempts for 257 yards and three touchdowns. AJ Barber had nine receptions for 59 yards, and Colella caught five passes for 56 yards, including his touchdown.
This game marks another exciting chapter in Ivy League football, showcasing the competitive spirit of both programs.
