NORMAN, Okla. — Jovantae Barnes showcased an impressive performance by accumulating 203 yards on the ground and scoring three touchdowns, leading Oklahoma to a commanding 59-14 victory over Maine on Saturday.
Quarterback Jackson Arnold contributed significantly by throwing for two touchdowns and adding another rushing touchdown to his accolades. Additionally, wide receiver J.J. Hester made a notable impact with four receptions for 112 yards and a touchdown. This decisive win allowed the Sooners (5-4, 1-4 Southeastern Conference) to end a troublesome three-game losing streak. Oklahoma amassed a staggering 665 total yards during the game, with 381 yards coming from their rushing attack.
The triumph marked Oklahoma’s 49th consecutive win against unranked non-conference foes.
On the other side, Maine struggled offensively, with quarterback Carter Peevy managing 123 passing yards and 30 rushing yards. The Sooners’ defense was formidable, limiting the Black Bears to a total of only 251 yards.
Maine (4-5, 2-3 Colonial Athletic Association), competing in the Football Championship Subdivision, faced a tough challenge as they now hold an all-time record of 4-27 against Football Bowl Subdivision teams.
The game began with Maine taking an early lead; Peevy connected with Cooper Heisey for a 3-yard touchdown pass on their initial drive. However, Oklahoma quickly responded as Barnes broke free for a 74-yard run right off the bat in their next series and scored on a 2-yard run shortly after.
From that point onward, Oklahoma took control of the game. Arnold delivered a stunning 90-yard touchdown pass to Hester that extended their advantage to 28-7 in the second quarter, representing the second-longest touchdown pass in the history of Memorial Stadium.
Before halftime, Oklahoma racked up 402 total yards—a season-high for one half—leading to a dominant 35-7 scoreline at the break.
In summary, Maine showed determination but ultimately fell short against a larger and faster Oklahoma team. The Black Bears started the game strong and displayed solid fundamentals, yet they could not keep pace with the Sooners’ power.
Meanwhile, the Sooners appeared to have refined their offense under the leadership of Joe Jon Finley, showcasing improved execution aside from a fumble and minor protection issues.
Looking ahead, Maine will host Bryant on Saturday, while Oklahoma will travel to face No. 25 Missouri the same day.
