Outfielder Randal Grichuk has opted against his $6 million mutual option with the Arizona Diamondbacks, resulting in a $1.75 million buyout and marking his entry into free agency as of Friday.
The 33-year-old athlete posted a batting average of .291 this past season, contributing 12 home runs and 46 RBIs, despite starting the season late due to recovery from right ankle surgery. Throughout the year, he played both left and right field, although he has taken on center field duties in prior seasons.
Back in February, Grichuk signed with the Diamondbacks on a contract that featured a base salary of $1.5 million along with the mutual option. The buyout amount increased as a result of his participation, which totaled 279 plate appearances during the season.
With 11 years of experience in Major League Baseball, Grichuk has maintained a career batting average of .252, accumulating 203 home runs and 602 RBIs over his tenure with several teams, including St. Louis (2014-2017), Toronto (2018-2021), Colorado (2022-2023), the Los Angeles Angels (2023), and lastly, the Diamondbacks.
