SEATTLE – The Seattle Mariners have opted to decline the $12 million option for second baseman Jorge Polanco, which means they will pay him a buyout of $750,000 and allow him to enter free agency.
In addition to Polanco, infielder Luis Urías has cleared waivers and has chosen to pursue free agency as well.
This past season, Polanco struggled, posting a career-low batting average of .213, along with 16 home runs and 45 runs batted in. His season was interrupted due to a strained right hamstring, which kept him out of action from May 26 to June 24.
Polanco was an All-Star in 2019 and, at 31 years old, has accumulated a career batting average of .263 with 128 home runs and 492 RBIs over 11 seasons split between the Minnesota Twins and the Seattle Mariners.
In February 2019, he signed a five-year contract worth $25.75 million. After the Twins exercised a $10.5 million option last November, he was traded to the Mariners in January in exchange for pitchers Anthony DeSclafani and Justin Topa, as well as two minor league players: outfielder Gabriel Gonzalez and pitcher Darren Brown. As part of the deal, Minnesota also sent $8 million to Seattle.
Urías, who is 27 years old, had an underwhelming season with a batting average of just .191, hitting four home runs and driving in 16 runs over 94 at-bats across 41 games. He was brought on board by the Mariners in a trade with Boston on November 17, in exchange for right-handed pitcher Isaiah Campbell.
