LOUISVILLE, Ky. — In a strong showing, Naomi Girma netted her first two international goals, contributing to the United States’ 3-0 victory over Argentina on Wednesday evening. This match marked the end of the year for the U.S. team competing on home turf.

It was the third match in just six days for the U.S., who previously secured wins against Iceland. These games followed the team’s triumph in securing the gold medal at the Paris Olympics during the summer.

Girma, who is known for her defensive prowess, found the net with a header in the 37th minute, celebrating with raised arms while U.S. coach Emma Hayes applauded from the sidelines. Girma had been a consistent presence in the Olympic tournament, playing every minute of the competition.

In a pivotal moment before halftime, Girma played a crucial role in setting up the second goal. After she made contact with a corner from Rose Lavelle, the ball was inadvertently deflected into Argentina’s goal by player Aldana Cometti, giving the U.S. a 2-0 lead.

Girma continued to shine in the second half, scoring again with another header just four minutes after the break to extend the lead to 3-0.

Hayes opted for a modified lineup against Argentina at Lynn Family Stadium in Louisville, choosing to rest certain players in light of the upcoming critical National Women’s Soccer League matches where playoff positions were still being determined.

The match saw the debut of three new players: goalkeeper Mandy Haught, Eva Gaetino, and Alyssa Malonson. It was a notable occurrence, as it marked the first time in 23 years that three or more debutants started for the national team in a single match.

Lavelle, who captained the match, received recognition for her 100th appearance for the national team, a milestone she achieved back in June.

Defender Emily Fox shared her thoughts about the match, describing it as a “victory tour,” celebrating three solid wins along with proud moments for individuals on the team.

The U.S. women’s national team will conclude their year with two friendly matches in Europe, beginning with a game against England at Wembley Stadium on November 30, followed by a match against the Netherlands in The Hague on December 3.
