The New York Jets have moved struggling kicker Greg Zuerlein to injured reserve and have brought in potential replacements, Riley Patterson and Spencer Shrader, to their practice squad.
Zuerlein has had a challenging season, having missed six of his 15 field-goal attempts. He was listed on the injury report on Tuesday due to an issue with his left leg, which is not his kicking leg.
The signings of Patterson and Shrader occurred after the Jets held a two-day tryout for at least six kickers. Either one of the newly signed kickers is anticipated to be promoted to the active roster for the Jets’ game against the Houston Texans on Thursday night.
The 36-year-old Zuerlein had been a dependable performer for the Jets over the past two seasons, especially after the team struggled to find stability at the kicker position in previous years. However, his performance this season has been far from satisfactory.
In the Jets’ narrow defeat to the New England Patriots last Sunday, Zuerlein missed a 44-yard field goal and an extra point. He re-signed with the Jets on a two-year contract in March but has struggled recently, missing four of his last seven kicks over the past three games.
Patterson has compiled an impressive record throughout his NFL career, successfully converting 59 of 67 field-goal attempts across 39 games while playing for teams such as Detroit, Jacksonville, and Cleveland. He has also completed 93 out of 97 extra-point attempts. Most recently, Patterson was with Washington during training camp this summer.
Shrader enters the mix as a rookie who signed with Indianapolis as an undrafted free agent after his tenure at Notre Dame. In his only NFL appearance, he successfully kicked three extra points in the season opener against the Texans.
In a related move, the Jets have signed linebacker Marcelino McCrary-Ball from the practice squad, which suggests that C.J. Mosley may not participate in the upcoming game against Houston. Mosley suffered a neck injury during warmups on Sunday and has been absent from practice this week.
Additionally, the Jets have released safety Jaylen Key from the practice squad. Key was notably the last player chosen in the draft this past April, earning the title of “Mr. Irrelevant.”
