A foreign national residing in Hong Kong has been apprehended on suspicion of murdering a Southeast Asian woman at a park waterfall in the region.

According to police officials, the woman, who was approximately 25 years old, worked as a domestic helper in Hong Kong but was not employed by the suspect. The incident occurred when the victim and the suspect visited the waterfall located in Pok Fu Lam on Hong Kong Island on a Sunday night. After about half an hour, the suspect reportedly left the site alone in a taxi, as confirmed by police superintendent Sin Kwok-ming during a news briefing on Tuesday evening.

The following morning, locals discovered the woman’s body floating in the pond beneath the waterfall. Preliminary autopsy results indicated that she had drowned after sustaining a blow to the head from an unidentified hard object. Sin reported that the victim had visible injuries on her head and limbs.

It was revealed that the suspect and his Hong Kong wife had traveled to mainland China shortly after the incident. They were arrested upon their return to Hong Kong on Tuesday. The man is being held on murder charges, while his wife faces accusations related to aiding in the crime.

Although the man possesses a Hong Kong identification card, law enforcement has not disclosed the nationalities of either the suspect or the victim. Sin expressed concerns about the circumstances surrounding the suspect. He noted various inconsistencies, including the suspect’s failure to notify the police and his quick departure from Hong Kong after the incident. Additionally, some evidence linked to him has reportedly vanished.

Investigations are ongoing, with police confirming that the couple remains in custody and has not yet been formally charged as of Wednesday morning. Sin emphasized the gravity of the case, stating that it involves a precious life and that authorities are committed to meticulously examining each detail to reveal the truth and achieve justice for the victim.
