MIAMI — Eric Rivers made history on Tuesday night by amassing 295 receiving yards, setting a new Florida International University single-game record during the Panthers’ 34-13 victory over New Mexico State. This win ended a challenging three-game losing streak for the team.

In the annals of Conference USA, only two other players have surpassed Rivers’ impressive yardage in a single game: Donnie Avery from Houston, who recorded 346 yards, and Carlos Henderson from Louisiana Tech, who had 326 yards. Previously, the FIU record was held at 201 yards, a milestone achieved by three players, including the notable T.Y. Hilton.

In stark contrast to Rivers’ stellar performance, New Mexico State struggled offensively, managing just 246 total yards and scoring only one touchdown throughout the match.

Rivers showcased his talents with three impressive receptions surpassing 50 yards. One of his most remarkable plays occurred late in the third quarter when he executed a one-handed catch, extending FIU’s lead to 17-6 with 7:49 remaining.

Quarterback Keyone Jenkins complemented Rivers’ efforts by throwing for 338 yards and achieving a personal best of four touchdown passes. Out of Jenkins’ 18 completed passes, 11 found their way to Rivers. His third touchdown throw came during the fourth quarter when he connected with Dean Patterson, restoring a two-possession lead for the Panthers at 27-13 with 7:45 to go.

For New Mexico State, quarterbacks Brandon Nunez and Santino Marucci each tossed an interception. The team faced this match off a bye week, following a nail-biting 33-30 double-overtime victory against Louisiana Tech.

The Panthers will have an extended break, as they won’t play again until November 16. They will travel to take on Jacksonville State in what promises to be an intriguing matchup.
