Top-seeded tennis player Jannik Sinner has withdrawn from the Paris Masters, citing illness as the reason for his decision.
The Italian athlete, who is set to finish the year as the No. 1 player in the world, communicated through tournament organizers that he will not be able to participate in this week’s event.
In a statement, Sinner shared, “I arrived here early to prepare but then I fell unwell. I’m currently dealing with a virus, which should pass in a couple of days. Therefore, I’m physically not prepared to compete.”
Sinner’s withdrawal marks the second departure of a prominent player from this final Masters 1000 event of the season, following the absence of seven-time champion Novak Djokovic.
Earlier this month, Sinner achieved a notable victory over Djokovic in the Shanghai Masters, beating him in straight sets, which secured him his record-breaking seventh title of the season. This achievement makes Sinner the first male player to claim more than six titles in a season since Andy Murray accomplished nine in 2016.
Sinner’s recent triumph came after he faced a defeat in the finals at the China Open in Beijing against Carlos Alcaraz, all while navigating an ongoing doping case.
