Aho nets overtime goal, leading Hurricanes to 4-3 victory against Canucks

VANCOUVER, British Columbia — In a thrilling overtime showdown, Sebastian Aho netted the winning goal just 47 seconds into the extra period, leading the Carolina Hurricanes to a 4-3 victory over the Vancouver Canucks on Monday evening.

Martin Necas was instrumental in the Hurricanes’ win, contributing one goal and one assist, while both William Carrier and Jack Roslovic also found the back of the net during regulation. Pyotr Kochetkov stood strong in goal, making 25 saves to help secure Carolina’s fourth consecutive win.

For the Canucks, Brock Boeser and Quinn Hughes each tallied a goal and an assist, helping their team stay competitive. Pius Suter’s goal late in the third period tied the game, while J.T. Miller provided two assists to aid the offensive efforts. In the net for Vancouver, Kevin Lankinen recorded 28 saves during the match.

Highlights from the game include the Hurricanes’ consistent scoring; they have managed to put at least three goals on the board in each of their last six outings, showcasing a record of 5-1-0 during that span. Necas currently leads the team with 11 points, combining four goals and seven assists, and is tied for the most goals on the team with Shayne Gostisbehere.

The Canucks faced a challenging start, trailing 3-1 early in the second period, yet they fought back to narrow the gap. They outshot the Hurricanes during both the second and third periods, by 12-10 and 11-8, respectively, demonstrating their determination.

A pivotal moment in the game occurred with just over three minutes remaining in the third period when Daniel Sprong raced down the ice on a breakaway. Kochetkov ventured far out of his crease to contest Sprong’s attempt; Sprong subsequently passed to Suter, who fired a shot past Kochetkov, evening the score at 3-3. This marked Suter’s second goal of the season.

Despite their offensive efforts, the Canucks’ power play continued to falter, failing to capitalize on three chances during the game. After an initial success of converting two out of four opportunities in their season opener, Vancouver has since struggled, achieving only three goals from 21 power play attempts over the last seven games.

Looking ahead, the Canucks are set to face the New Jersey Devils on Wednesday to complete a three-game homestand. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes will head to Boston for their next challenge on Thursday.
