A significant explosion involving fireworks led to injuries for over 150 individuals during a religious celebration at a temple in southern India, according to reports released on Tuesday.

The incident took place on Monday night when a storage facility for fireworks near the Veerarkavu temple ignited into flames. This information was reported by the Press Trust of India, referencing local police sources. The location of this explosion was in Kasargod, situated approximately 580 kilometers (360 miles) northwest of Thiruvananthapuram, the capital of Kerala state.

The victims were promptly taken to several hospitals across Kasargod, Kannur, and Mangaluru districts for medical treatment, with eight individuals reported to have sustained serious injuries.

In India, there is a high demand for firecrackers, especially during religious festivities and weddings. Tragically, fatal accidents occur nearly every year due to unsafe working conditions in makeshift fireworks factories that lack adequate safety measures.

Last July, a similar explosion at a fireworks production facility in southern India resulted in the deaths of eight people. In 2018, a devastating fire at a firecracker factory in New Delhi claimed the lives of 17 workers. Additionally, a year prior, a blast in a Madhya Pradesh village while firecrackers were being manufactured resulted in 23 fatalities.
