BRISTOL, Conn. — “Monday Night Football” will get a unique twist when it airs on December 9, featuring an alternate telecast set in the world of “The Simpsons.” The matchup between the Cincinnati Bengals and the Dallas Cowboys will be broadcast live from Atoms Stadium in Springfield, the fictional setting of the long-running animated series.
Fans can catch “The Simpsons Funday Football” on ESPN+ and Disney+, while the traditional broadcast will continue on ESPN and ABC. This marks the second consecutive year that ESPN has offered an alternative viewing experience for an NFL game. Last year, the network creatively incorporated characters from “Toy Story” during a Sunday morning game set in London between the Atlanta Falcons and Jacksonville Jaguars.
In this upcoming telecast, Bart Simpson will support the Bengals, while his father, Homer, will cheer for the Cowboys. Additional beloved characters from the series, such as Marge, Lisa, and Maggie, will also make appearances throughout the broadcast.
The team behind “The Simpsons” is set to produce original content that will be interwoven into the telecast, providing unique segments before, during, and after the game.
ESPN has seen considerable success with alternative NFL broadcasts, including the popular “ManningCast,” which has become a staple during “Monday Night Football” as well as playoff matchups. The entirety of this special telecast will be fully animated, showcasing player movements that mirror real-time actions on the field. This synchronization is achieved through advanced player-tracking technology, powered by the NFL’s Next Gen Stats system and the innovative capabilities of Beyond Sports.
Beyond Sports, a Netherlands-based firm, plays a key role in the animation process, ensuring that the player tracking data seamlessly integrates with the animated storytelling. This blend of beloved characters and real-time sports action promises to create a distinctive viewing experience for football fans.
